This recipe serves about 4 people as a side dish. If you are cooking for a large crowd, you can easily double this recipe. Store leftovers completely cooled in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days.

Ingredients you need to make homemade Chow Mein:

Chow Mein Noodles – You'll need about a half pound of chow mein noodles, or you can use thin spaghetti if you don't have chow mein noodles on hand.

Carrot – You'll need one large carrot.

Cabbage – About a half head of cabbage shredded very thin or equivalent to 3 1/2 cups.

Green Onion – About four green onions or equivalent to a quarter cup cut into 1 inch pieces.

Garlic Cloves – Fresh garlic is best in this recipe! You will need a total of 3 large cloves.

Oyster Sauce – You can use regular oyster sauce or vegetarian oyster sauce. You should be able to find this in the Asian cuisine aisle of your grocery store.

Soy Sauce – I highly recommend low sodium soy sauce.

Sesame Oil – A good pure sesame oil is best.

Sugar – Regular white granulated sugar is best, but you can also use brown sugar if you don't have white on hand.

Rice Vinegar – Rice vinegar or white wine vinegar both work excellent in this recipe.

Sriracha – Adds minimal heat to the sauce.

Water – To mix with the cornstarch.

Cornstarch – To lightly thicken sauce.

Tools to have on hand for this recipe:

  • Wok or Nonstick Skillet – To cook the chow mein in.
  • Wooden or Silicone Spoon/Spatula – For stirring the chow mein while cooking.
  • Measuring Cups + Spoons – To properly measure all of your ingredients.
